Coronation: Lou Zilin is crowned Miss China by her mentor television presenter Yue-Sai Kan
They haven't won the Miss Universe title in over a decade, so this year the Chinese have decided they're not leaving anything to chance.
While their contender Lou Zilin is undeniably stunning, her team are worried she'll never scoop the prestigious title because she's just too Chinese.
They've decided the old Oriental ideal of a shy, retiring type, who giggles behind her hand at the slightest compliment just won't make the grade in this modern world.
So they've packed 24-year-old Miss Zilin off to New York where she can learn the ways of the wild west.
The Miss Universe contender has been sent to New York to learn how to be more western
Under the supervision of a strict governess, the raven-haired beauty is being given a crash course in deportment fitting of a modern urban woman.
From her new home on New York's trendy Upper West Side Miss Zilin is learning how to behave at parties and how to be more assertive in her opinions.
She has received training in conversation technique, table manners as well as the ancient art of disco dancing.
Her guide is China's answer to Oprah Winfrey, television presenter Yue-Sai Kan, who rose to fame as the globetrotting host of a hit travelogue series.
With this year's competition is being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Yue-Sai feels she has much work to do before her young charge is ready to cut it as a modern woman.
Yue-Sai told the Times: 'When I say she's too Chinese, I don't mean to be negative. Too Chinese means they are very reserved.
'Most judges are probably not Asians. Some will be Brazilian. Brazilian Culture and Chinese culture are very different. They are taught to be pro-active and agressive. Chinese are not raised like that.'
Miss Zilin, who introduces herself as Rosaline, has met Paul McCartney and hip hop artist Russell Simmons and has accompanied Claire Danes to a film screening.
