The couple decided to save the top tier of their magnificent eight-tiered wedding cake - a tradition usually undertaken by couples who plan to serve the cake at the christening of their first born.
The pair put the top two tiers of the cake away and tucked into the third as they celebrated their marriage with friends and family, royal wedding cake designer Fiona Cairns said.
The couple cut the fruit cake, made of 17 individual cakes, with a sword Ms Cairns said: 'As is tradition, the Duke and Duchess have kept the top two tiers. The third tier was cut up and served at the wedding together with the extra fruit cake we supplied.'
Miranda Eason, editor of You & Your Wedding magazine, added: 'Saving the top tier to celebrate the birth of the first born is the tradition.
'But couples are also saving it for their first anniversary to crack open with a bottle of bubbly.'
The bride gave detailed instructions for the cake to include 17 different blooms and foliage for their meaning or symbolism
The confectionery masterpiece, covered in cream and white icing and decorated with up to 900 delicate sugar-paste flowers, is going on display at Buckingham Palace as part of an exhibition dedicated to the royal nuptials.
